A common issue that can occur when connecting your microphone to a 3.5 mm jack is a consistent crackling sound. This sound is caused by the default audio format settings for the microphone being set far too high for the microphone which results in a crackling, static sound.
To resolve this issue, you'll need to adjust the default audio format settings in Windows for the onboard audio.
Open the ⚙ Settings app in Windows, then select System > Sound
Scroll down until you see the All sound devices option.
In the Input devices section, select your motherboard's onboard audio to open the Properties for the device.
The exact name will vary depending on your motherboard, with many defaulting to High Definition Audio Device. For more information, please refer to your motherboard user's manual.
In the Format Dropdown, try using a lower quality format setting such as the examples below:
- 2-channel, 16-bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality) - This one has the highest compatibility with most headsets.
- 2-channel, 16-bit 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) - This one has high compatibility with higher-end headsets.
After adjusting the Format setting, use the Start test button to do a quick recording, then use the Play button to listen back. If the crackling has disappeared, you've successfully matched the input format to your headset.
