This article will cover how to update the BIOS on your NZXT Gaming PC.
Why should I update my BIOS?
UEFI and BIOS updates may include stability or performance improvements or may help patch a security issue or address a platform-wide issue. Because of this, it is recommended to update your BIOS from time to time.
How often should I update my BIOS?
It is recommended to check for updates for your motherboard every 3-4 months. In some situations, a critical update may be released that includes a major adjustment or fix. For these issues, it is recommended to update your UEFI/BIOS immediately.
What do I need to update the BIOS?
For most BIOS updaters, the requirements are going to be the same:
- An FAT32 formatted USB Flash Drive
- 32GB or smaller is recommended, as larger drives cannot be formatted to FAT32 easily
- The latest BIOS update file from the manufacturer's page (see guides below)
How to Identify your Motherboard & BIOS Version
To find your current motherboard information, open up the NZXT CAM software and go to the System Specs tab. In here, click the Motherboard name to show your Motherboard model as well as the current BIOS version and BIOS date.
How to Update your Motherboard
With your motherboard and BIOS version confirmed, you'll need to go to the Manufacturer Product Page for your particular motherboard and confirm if a BIOS update is available. If an update is available, download the latest update to your USB Flash Drive.
Note: Most motherboard BIOS updates will be provided as a Compressed Folder (.zip). You will need to Extract the contents of the Compressed Folder before continuing.
Asus
Asus motherboards can be easily updated using their EZ Flash Utility built into the BIOS.
- Reboot your PC, at the ASUS or ROG Splash Screen, press Delete on your keyboard to enter the BIOS Setup Menu.
- In the BIOS Setup Menu, make sure you are in Advanced Mode. If you are in EZ Mode, there should be a button to switch modes located in the bottom-right corner.
- In Advanced Mode, select Tool from the top bar, then select Asus EZ Flash 3 Utility.
- In the Asus EZ Flash 3 Utility, select your Flash Drive, then double-click the extracted BIOS file. These will usually end in .CAP
- At the "Do you want to read this file?" screen, click Yes, then repeat this for the BIOS update prompt.
- Do not power off the PC or interrupt the BIOS update process. The system may automatically reboot itself to complete the BIOS update. Depending on the model of motherboard, your system may reboot several times.
- After the PC has rebooted, it is recommended to reload the Default Settings for your motherboard. To do this, re-enter the BIOS Setup Menu and make sure you are in EZ Mode, then choose Default (F5) at the bottom of the screen. When prompted to restore optimized defaults, click Yes, then choose Exit followed by Save Changes and Exit.
Once the update is completed, the PC will automatically reboot either to the BIOS Setup screen or to Windows. You can confirm the update was successful by checking the System Specs tab in NZXT CAM.
ASRock
ASRock motherboards can be easily updated using their Instant Flash Utility built into the BIOS.
- Reboot your PC, at the ASRock Splash screen, press Delete on your keyboard to enter the BIOS Setup Menu.
- In the BIOS Setup Menu, make sure you are in Advanced Mode. If you are in Easy Mode, there should be a button to switch modes in the top-right corner.
- In Advanced Mode, select Tool from the top bar, then select Instant Flash.
- The utility will automatically scan all attached compatible flash drives for the update file. If multiple files are detected, select the file that matches the latest BIOS update (i.e. P1.30 will end in 1.3
- Click Update, then select Yes when prompted to update your UEFI/BIOS.
- Do not power off the PC or interrupt the BIOS update process. The system may automatically reboot itself to complete the BIOS update. Depending on the model of motherboard, your system may reboot several times.
- Once the BIOS update is completed, you will get a Programming success screen. Press Enter or click OK to reboot your PC.
- After the PC has rebooted, it is recommended to reload the Default Settings for your motherboard. To do this, re-enter the BIOS Setup Menu and click Exit, then choose Load Default Settings followed by Exit Saving Changes.
Once the update is completed, the PC will automatically reboot either to the BIOS Setup screen or to Windows. You can confirm the update was successful by checking the System Specs tab in NZXT CAM.
Gigabyte
Gigabyte motherboards can be easily updated using their Q-Flash Utility built into the BIOS.
- Reboot your PC, at the Gigabyte UD or Aorus Splash screen, press Delete on your keyboard to enter the BIOS Setup Menu.
- In the BIOS Setup Menu, select the Q-Flash option.
- In the Q-Flash Menu, select Update BIOS.
- Select your USB Flash Drive, then double-click the extracted BIOS update file from the window. This file name will usually end in the BIOS version (i.e. BIOS F3d will end in .F3d)
- At the Update BIOS prompt, click Yes.
- The BIOS update may verify before starting. Once verifying has completed, click the Start button.
- Do not power off the PC or interrupt the BIOS update process. The system may automatically reboot itself to complete the BIOS update. Depending on the model of motherboard, your system may reboot several times.
- Once the BIOS update has completed, the system will restart automatically.
- After the PC has rebooted, it is recommended to reload the Default Settings for your motherboard. To do this, re-enter the BIOS Setup Menu and select Load Optimized Defaults, then click Yes when prompted, then Save & Exit.
Once the update is completed, the PC will automatically reboot either to the BIOS Setup screen or to Windows. You can confirm the update was successful by checking the System Specs tab in NZXT CAM.
MSI
MSI motherboards can be easily updated using their M-Flash Utility built into the BIOS.
- Reboot your PC, at the MSI or MPG Splash screen, press Delete on your keyboard to enter the BIOS Setup Menu.
- In the BIOS Setup Menu, select the M-Flash option. The system may prompt you to reboot to enter flash mode. If it does, click Yes.
- In the M-Flash Menu, select your USB Flash Drive, then double-click the extracted BIOS update file. This file name will usually end in the BIOS version (i.e. BIOS A10 will end in .A10)
- At the "Are you sure?" prompt, click Yes. This prompt may include update or release notes.
- Do not power off the PC or interrupt the BIOS update process. The system may automatically reboot itself to complete the BIOS update. Depending on the model of motherboard, your system may reboot several times.
- Once the BIOS update has completed, the system will restart automatically.
- After the PC has rebooted, it is recommended to reload the Default Settings for your motherboard. To do this, re-enter the BIOS Setup Menu and select Advanced Mode at the top of the screen if it is available. From here, choose Settings, followed by Save & Exit and finally Restore Defaults. When prompted to restore optimized defaults, click Yes, then Save Changes and Reboot.
Once the update is completed, the PC will automatically reboot either to the BIOS Setup screen or to Windows. You can confirm the update was successful by checking the System Specs tab in NZXT CAM.
